A Personal Message From Jim Becker

Joomla is an amazing content management system and can be used to create some dramatic and impressive websites. In fact it’s the only content management system you’ll ever need… however, it is certainly not easy to use when you first start.

I vividly remember when I first downloaded Joomla (and that was around 4 years ago), I was so excited, as I knew I was on the verge of creating great websites (I’d seen so many awesome examples of what people could do with Joomla), and I just couldn’t wait to start using it.

But when I opened the program for the first time I was in “shock”, I felt completely lost and totally overwhelmed because I just couldn’t do anything. It was so frustrating!

Everything seemed so complicated, it made me feel like I needed a PhD just to install Joomla! I had a sinking feeling in my stomach, I think “despair” would be a pretty good way to describe the feeling

I didn’t know where to start to just do the simplest of tasks, and when I saw the manual, I felt worse still…

… You see I did NOT want to become a Joomla genius, I just wanted to feel comfortable doing the most common tasks, and frankly the thought of having to read a huge manual or thick book just to make my website was plain depressing!

What I wanted to know was the shortcuts… not everything, just the simple stuff that I was most likely going to use, for example:

I wanted to know how to install Joomla…

I wanted to create some pages and add some content quickly and easily…

I wanted to add some pictures, but without compromising quality…

I wanted to make cool looking websites, without headaches or stress.

And many other basic tasks - I’m sure you know what I mean.

I hated that feeling of intimidation when I opened the program and I just wanted to feel confident (not overwhelmed) doing the most common tasks, and produce the kind of websites which initially attracted me to Joomla, without having to invest weeks of learning to do so!

BUT from what I could see the learning curve was just too steep, even for the “easy stuff” like installing Joomla, installing a blog, or even adding some content…

Maybe you can relate to this… maybe you feel the same?

Well… if that’s the case, if you’re like me and you want to use Joomla… but you don’t have the time or patience for boring manuals, or frustrating trial and error, then I have good news for you…

Don’t Even Think About Starting With
Joomla Before You Learn About This…

You are going to love this…

…I have created a complete video based Joomla learning system which allows you to master all the basic as well as some advanced functions of Joomla in under 7 hours!

As it’s all video based, you simply sit back and watch it on your computer right away, and within just 7 hours you’ll be able to produce results you can’t even begin to imagine.

(Stop a moment and just think about what you have just read… literally under 7 hours from now, you will be able to manage most of the important Joomla tasks with ease!).

These are videos of me actually using Joomla right before your very eyes, as if you were literally sitting side by side with me, looking over my shoulder as I work with Joomla on your computer showing you how each task is done.

Now, besides all the boring manuals and books out there, there are also many forums and a large collection of help files, but I know that when I want to make Joomla sites, I want to MAKE them, not spending days searching for answers, going the trial-and-error way…

…That’s why I have made these nearly 7 hours of video based instructions, fully PC and Mac compatible, so that you can watch and learn Joomla at your own pace and without any fixed schedule… working from the comfort of your own computer!

You have NEVER had it easier to finally learn Joomla! Want to see exactly what the tutorials are like? Check this out…

Dear friend,

Let’s face it: Learning HTML is essential if you have a website!

Quite simply HTML is a must for anyone who plans to create or maintain their own website. It is also worth understanding for a wide range of applications beyond that as well. HTML is a great skill to have whether you need to learn how to create web page structure, colors, graphics, links, or embed images or videos.

I remember the days when I first started out with web design and creation ….I was excited to begin setting up my site and creating a real impact online —- I was certain that I’d have all the things I need in place in no time at all —- That is until I faced HTML! I felt like I was facing a mountainous challenge to learn how to use this unknown language.

HTML had me at a complete loss!

I couldn’t even imagine where to start…. After making an effort to implement a few basics I had some luck, but overall I was stumped! I tried to source instructions to master this ‘foreign language’ ……. Great idea until I saw that the whole thing was total “web design jargon.” The exercise was a waste of time and left me no more enlightened on how to use HTML.

What I wanted, just like you need now, was a straightforward and systematic explanation, or even better, a visual tutorial. I needed to be shown step-by-step exactly how I could progress through the process of creating a HTML site. Finally, following weeks of seeking a solution, I found the perfect answer. I had found a way to go from a total HTML beginner to an expert with HTML in a matter of hours—–Now I’d like to show you how you can do the same!

These video tutorials are an excellent tool whether you’re new to HTML or an experienced web user looking to expand your knowledge base. Once you uncover these essentials of HTML the creation of a vast range of professional, high quality web sites becomes second nature - allowing you to establish your online presence with speed and ease.

Learning to master the techniques of HTML is possible with these totally unique video tutorials:

Discover how to generate an attractive background for your website through a tutorial dedicated to this subject

You have spent a considerable amount getting your new business off the ground and now it is time to join your comrades online.

Many budding entrepreneurs opt to self-design their website, and why not, who better knows their business right?

If you are developing a blueprint for your site there are few things that must be considered. Web pages which are visually appealing and fuelled with sales oomph may actually cause your site to lose visitors.

Say NO to Flash Animation

If you have ever been to a site where the first page is some fancy animation, it is not as appealing as it is annoying. Out of the world’s top sites NONE of them are prefaced by flash animation. What’s more when Google scans the first page of your site for relevant content, it can’t interpret the animation and registers the first page as void of content.

Flash animation can also take a notoriously long time to load. Not everyone has fast internet access so if you make your visitors wait most will leave the site and visit one that downloads quicker.

First Thing’s First; Key Information

Users don’t want to waste time looking for the most important information; make it easy for them by showing your company’s product on the first page. Make this message clear and to the point. Where possible adorn the page headings and titles with the keywords that best describe your site. Google places greater importance on information inside headings. So if you can succeed in getting your message across here your site is more likely to place well in the Google rankings.

Make sure contact details are easily visible. If they aren’t on your first page, make sure they are at least a click away.

Consistency is Key

The design must be simple and effective, which needs to be a carried throughout the entire site. Don’t go overboard with too many different fonts, colours and layouts.

When I Hear Music…

Music on a webpage, like flash animation, takes too long to load and because of this drives visitors from your site rather than draws them in. Unless your business is music related, don’t use music on your site to add extra flavour.

If people want to listen to music while they browse they will open their iTunes, not log on to your site.

Don’t Forget to Update!

Once your site is live, it still needs maintenance! Give it a face lift once the design becomes dated. Analyse the traffic reports, available from your hosting supplier, and customise your sight to better suit those who are visiting it the most. Make sure all of the links on your sight are operational; you will lose customers quickly if error messages on your site are common place.

The best plan of attack is to find a qualified web designer to work through any issues for you. Yet if this is not within your budget try and at least give your site the best chance of success.

How many times have you tried to log on to a site and failed where previously you have had unabated access? The ‘thinking icon’ deliberates, contemplates and meditates, but still the desired information refuses to appear.

‘It’s the useless server again,’ you presume after a frustrating five minutes spent repeatedly clicking Mr Refresh. However researchers at the University of Washington have now discovered that this may not necessarily be the case.

Black Holes on the Net

Graduate student Ethan Katz-Bassett and his advisor Arvind Krishnamurthy have discovered that information is constantly being lost along digital conduits that were previously operational. They have termed these areas where information travels into oblivion as the internet’s ‘black holes’, and apparently they comprise a whopping 10% of the internet.

It appears the internet, which is trusted as a reliable communication network for many vital services, is actually less dependable than phone networks. In fact since the inception of their analysis last September almost a million black holes and reachability problems have been detected.

The Hubble Program

The researchers have designed a system called Hubble, named after the NASA space telescope that first detected intergalactic black holes. It operates via a network of cyber-probes which detect computers that can be reached by some, but not all, of the internet. This data suggest that there is an issue occurring en route and there is the presence of a black hole. The probes monitor up to 90% of the net.

Bassett and Krishnamurthy hope the new technology will drastically improve the functionality of the internet by allowing ISPs to track down the source of problems experienced on their network. Their data is updated every 15 minutes and their website hosts a map illustrating where black holes are occurring at any given minute.

I think the answer is “No”. It is not serious and it is not appropriate. People got crazy about social networking, and sometimes they even forgot that most social networking tool didn’t bring any order and systematize the customer support efforts and operations. The social networking tools work best for entertainment purposes, marketing and help us a lot to stay in touch with friends and partners. They can be used even for front desk support, but they do not offer accountability.

The reason to start this post is that I’ve seen that US Today published an article “Businesses use Twitter to communicate with customers“. It gives a few examples of how major corporations such as Comcast that use the social network to ask question to their customers and to keep them informed.

“When a Stanley Cup broadcast suddenly went black in late April, many Comcast subscribers simply scooted to Twitter to find out why”, says the story in USToday. “It was there — not on a phone system with multiple options — they discovered that a lightning storm in Atlanta had caused a power outage during the Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins hockey playoff game, and that the transmission would be restored soon”, explains the paper.

USTodays reports that corporate giants such as Comcast, PepsiCo, JetBlue Airways, Whole Foods Market and others are “beefing up direct communications with customers through social-media tools such as Twitter”.

Does Twitter Work In Web Hosting Business?

Web hosting is intangible business, in which customers don’t have a physical contact with their service provider. This means that the web hosts must use a very well-organized customer relationship management systems, that help them to communicate with customers and to create confidence. Twitter works fine to stay in touch, but if you want to provide a first class customer service just forget it.

A number of data centres in various parts of Australia have recently experienced power outages. While these power outages are usually outside the control of the data centres themselves, it is of some concern that in many cases the mains failure backup generators and uninterruptible power supplies did not function as intended, resulting in thousands of websites and email servers being unavailable.

Our primary web and email servers, which are located in the Planet Domain Data Centre in Brisbane, were not affected by these outages but these recent events have prompted me to give you an outline of the backup systems that are in place to protect your web sites and email services in the event of a mains power failure – and also the procedures that are followed in order to ensure that these systems will work when required.

Power Specifications

Minimum N+1 Redundancy on Power Supply – if a power module failure occurs, the other modules will continue to supply power. (See below for definition of N+1)

Diverse A&B Feeds Through 120KVA UPS (N+1) – in the event of one power supply failing, the other supply is able to power the load. (See below for definition of N+1)

Backup Batteries – these provide temporary power while generator powered mains failure backup system kicks in.

Onsite Power Generator With 48 Hours Fuel Supply – this is the workhorse which will supply power during long term mains power outages. Sufficient quantities of fuel are stored onsite to power the data centre for 48 hours. The centre also has a contract which enables additional fuel supplies to be delivered within 2 hours.

What does “N+1″ mean? - An N+1 redundancy is a system configuration in which multiple components (N) have at least one independent backup component to ensure system functionality continues in the event of a system failure. To be at a level of N+1, the overall system integrity should not be impacted by the failure of any one component, and should continue to function at acceptable performance levels after the loss of any component.

Testing Regime

Generator and UPS are tested monthly and loads are varied at scheduled intervals:

Three monthly – Generators are tested for 1 hour under full load using a portable “Load Bank”.

Six monthly – Generators are tested for 1 hour by switching the building from mains to generator, thus testing the system under a typical load that would be experienced during a mains power failure.

With these measures in place, we are confident that the Planetdomain Data Centre will continue to provide Dynamic Internet customers with the reliability and continuity of service that they have come to expect – even in the event of the loss of mains power.
